07/05/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former National League Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter tries to repeat a masterpiece against Cincinnati today when he and the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Reds at Great American Ball Park to finish up a three-game holiday weekend series.

St. Louis won the opener, 7-4, with a late rally on Friday, but was beaten, 5-2, on Saturday, as Micah Owings tossed 6 2/3 strong innings for the Reds and hit his third home run of the year, lifting Cincinnati to a 5-2 victory.

The loss dropped the Cardinals into a tie with Milwaukee for first place in the NL's Central Division, while lifting the Reds within two games of the division lead.

Joey Votto also homered and tripled, knocking in two, while Willy Taveras collected three hits and scored a run for the Reds, who have won five of their last seven.

Owings (6-8) won for the third time in four starts, allowing six hits and two runs with two walks and six strikeouts. Francisco Cordero picked up his 20th save of the season by hurling a perfect ninth.

Brad Thompson (2-5) took the loss after lasting five frames and yielding five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and two walks. Colby Rasmus hit a solo home run for the Cardinals, who had a three-game win streak broken.

Carpenter, meanwhile, twirled a brilliant nine innings against Cincinnati on June 4 in St. Louis, giving up just three hits and a run in a 3-1 victory.

The win, in which he walked none and struck out three, lifted his career mark against the Reds to 4-3 in 10 starts, with a 2.29 earned run average in 74 2/3 innings.

He's just 1-3 in five starts since, however, defeating only Kansas City, while losing to Cleveland, the New York Mets and San Francisco.

For the Reds, right-hander Bronson Arroyo tries to avenge a June 2 loss and end a six-start slump.

The Key west, Florida native dropped a 5-2 verdict at Busch Stadium to fall to 7-4 on the season and is 1-3 with a no-decision since, most recently losing to Arizona, 6-2, after allowing 10 hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

In his last four losses, Arroyo has been hit hard, surrendering 36 hits and 24 runs in 19 1/3 innings.

He is 5-7 against the Cardinals in 20 career appearances, with a 4.59 ERA in 113 2/3 innings.

Cincinnati has won four of nine meetings with the Cards this season.

A talented beat-boxer Blake Lewis was a hit during the group sing in Hollywood but Simon explained that this is a singing contest just before he told him he was “in.”
